PURPOSE: A character input method and apparatus of a portable terminal using a motion sensor are provided to input characters with the keys of a limited number and the movement of the portable terminal. CONSTITUTION: A portable terminal displays a character arrangement corresponding to a selected key in a screen(S120). If a motion sensor senses the first direction of movement, the portable terminal displays the first character of the displayed characters(S130). If the motion sensor senses the second direction of movement, the portable terminal converts the first character into a second character(S140,S150). A user selects the second character(S160).
