<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller capable of performing control by an optimum control method for each projection apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: A retinal scanning display (RSD) 5 includes a controller 100 and a projection apparatus 200. The controller 100 reads identification information from an EEPROM arranged in the projection apparatus 200 when connected to the projection apparatus 200 via a cable 190. The controller 100 identifies the projection apparatus 200 on the basis of the read identification information, so as to specify an optimum control method. The controller 100 controls the projection apparatus 200 on the basis of the specified control method, so as to drive the projection apparatus 200. Image light is emitted from an emission device 210 of the projection apparatus 200 to the half mirror 250.
