<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining a relative timing of a pilot signal transmitted from a base station with respect to a timing reference signal for base station and mobile station time calibration within a communication system that has position location capabilities. <P>SOLUTION: A reference pilot signal having a known timing relationship to a timing reference signal is generated on the same carrier frequency on which a pilot signal is generated by a base station.
