The rain warning device has a rain sensor and a transmission unit with an interface for a radio network over which a message can to be emitted by short message service (SMS) or as an email message to the vehicle owner. Preferably the rain warning message is transmitted if the vehicle roof is at least partly opened, the rain sensor detects rain, and the vehicle is locked.
