摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate cracks in or breakage of a single- or multi-core wire billet during processing of a MgB<SB POS="POST">2</SB>superconducting wire rod into an elongated, plastic-formed wire, and thickness variations in the internal superconducting core of a single-core wire billet. <P>SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing a superconducting wire rod involves producing a bar-like composite material composed of a magnesium-containing tubular member filled with boron-containing powder, inserting a plurality of the bar-like composite materials into a metal tube with the tubular member kept in contact with the metal tube, and lengthening the metal tube. The result is a superconducting wire rod which includes a magnesium diboride-containing superconducting core and a metal tube covering the superconducting core, the superconducting core in its cross section having mesh-patterned voids extending in the lengthwise direction.
