Apparatus for continuous casting of an ingot comprises a first chamber16, a casting mould 20 in the first chamber 16 and a second chamber 300 through which the ingot passes along a pathway from the first chamber 16 into external atmosphere. Seals 312 in the second chamber 300 surround the pathway. In a first apparatus (Fig. 21 )the seals 312 are, in use sequentially forced against the ingot by means of moveable backing members, with each seal 312 being activated in response to the detection of inert gas which originates from the first chamber 16. In a second apparatus (Fig 29) the seals 380 are in use forced against the ingot 79 by vertically compressing the second chamber 386 and thereby decreasing the inner perimeters of the seals 380. |
