<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic key system for a vehicle capable of improving security. <P>SOLUTION: An electronic key system for a vehicle performs various control operations of the vehicle by sending/receiving information encrypted by a common cipher key between an in-vehicle machine 1 and a portable machine 1. The system is capable of selectively setting a vehicle operation mode between a normal mode capable of allowing the use of all the functions of the vehicle and a valet mode which limits the use of the vehicle. Upon selection of the vehicle operation mode from the normal mode to the valet mode, the cipher key used for encryption is changed to the cipher key for the valet mode.
