<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic wave generating element and the like where a main lobe of a resultant electromagnetic wave has a large and an approximately uni-directional pattern by providing an optical waveguide comprising a plurality of partial waveguides. <P>SOLUTION: The electromagnetic wave generating element includes an optical waveguide comprising a plurality of partial waveguides 101, 104, and 107 each of which is interposed between dielectrics 10 and 11 and contains a nonlinear optical crystal. The plurality of partial waveguides 101, 104, and 107 are configured so that angles formed by a propagation direction of light with respect to the waveguides are about 2θ<SB POS="POST">c</SB>, where θ<SB POS="POST">c</SB>is defined as θ<SB POS="POST">c</SB>=cos<SP POS="POST">-1</SP>(n/√ε<SB POS="POST">eff</SB>), an n is a refractive index for light of the nonlinear optical crystal, and ε<SB POS="POST">eff</SB>is an effective dielectric constant for an electromagnetic wave of the dielectrics 10 and 11 and the partial waveguides 101, 104, and 107. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
