The present invention provides a method for message update prompting and network client. The method comprises: the client determines the number of update prompt symbols according to the quantity of messages to be updated provided by a server and generates a corresponding number of the update prompt symbols; the client modifies the state parameter of the update prompt symbols and displays the update prompt symbols according to the modified state parameter. With the method and the client provided in the present invention, users can comprehend the number of updated messages according to the displayed update prompt symbols, thus greatly improving the user's network experience.
