<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone central unit having a facility which permits automatic answering functions, such as absence settings, unattended recording, and transfer settings which have already been set, to be automatically set by a proxy answering operation from another telephone when the user is absent. <P>SOLUTION: When an incoming call from a telephone network 2 is detected by an outside line interface 301, an exchange control unit 302 terminates the call at a corresponding call destination extension telephone 4a through an inside line interface 303. When an answering processing directive command (special number dial or proxy answering button depressed) from a proxy answering extension telephone 4b is detected by a proxy answering detection unit 313, the exchange control unit 302 executes proxy answering processing on the call destination extension telephone 4a and, at the same time, it stores for the call destination extension telephone 4a an incoming call rejection, unattended recording, and answering-for-transfer processing in an absent time settings storage unit 312 according to the settings in an absence mode storage unit 309.
