<p>A method and apparatus for conducting a transaction are described. A user token, associated with a user account having a plurality of currency balances in different currencies, is provided to a merchant. This is followed for a request for authorisation of a transaction to debit a transaction amount from one of the currency balances in the account. Authorisation for the transaction is provided only if a cumulative currency balance in the account exceeds the transaction amount by a predetermined amount, where the cumulative currency balance is determined by summing the currency balances in the different currencies in the user account and any credit limit for the user account. The transaction is completed only if authorisation is provided. Methods and apparatus for transferring funds to such an account and for conducting off-line transactions between user tokens of this type are also described.</p> |
