The method involves detecting a crash event, and starting a timer during occurrence of the crash event depending on a predetermined criterion. Occupant advancement is predicted or calculated at the beginning with the detected crash event. A security element (1) i.e. airbag, is triggered by a control unit (2), when the time detected by the timer and the predicted or calculated occupant advancement exceed respective predetermined threshold values, which are parameterized depending on a belt condition and/or occupant weight and/or a seat position of the occupant.
