A brightness control unit (6) in a display device (100) is provided with: an average brightness level computation unit (21) that computes the average brightness level from a video signal, which is the video source of a video to be displayed on a display screen; a setting reception unit (22) that receives arbitrarily-defined settings associated with multiple brightness control levels obtained by splitting a value between a first maximum display brightness and a second maximum display brightness which are regarded as a lower limit and an upper limit; a maximum display brightness computation unit (23) that determines the maximum display brightness of the display screen from the screen illuminance, the average brightness level and the abovementioned settings; and a light source output computation unit (24) that determines the output value to be provided to a light source (3) in such a manner that the maximum display brightness of the display screen from the maximum display brightness determined by the maximum display brightness computation unit (23) becomes the maximum display brightness determined by the maximum display brightness computation unit (23).
