1,210,664. Zinc electrode. P. R. MALLORY & CO. INC. 14 Nov., 1967 [14 Nov., 1966], No. 51733/67. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C7] A porous electrode of amalgamated zinc is formed by (a) mixing NH 4 Cl powder, MgSO 4 powder and Zn powder, (b) adding an aliphatic organic liquid, (c) adding Hg 2 Cl 2 , (d) compacting the mixture while it sets, (e) leaching out all chloride ion and (f) drying the compact. In step (b) the liquid may be non-polar, inert and involatile, e.g. deodorized kerosine. In' step (e) the magnesium, ammonium and sulphate ions may also be leached out. The compact may be dried in a preheated oven after washing in MeOH. The dry electrode should be stored in a desiccator. An alkaline cell containing the electrode may be used at temperatures down to - 30‹ C. In the cell illustrated the depolarizer 12 may comprise HgO, MnO 2 or Ag 2 O and 5-25% of graphite. |
