The heat transmission problems, esp. of liquid sodium cooled reactors, are studied using dummy fuel rods in which the fission heat is simulated by the exothermic chemical reaction between fuel and oxygen in the form of a gaseous or liquid mixture. The dummy rods, containing no nuclear fuel and virtually empty sheaths, are placed in that part of the core which is to be examined and are covered by the coolant flow. The exothermic reaction is distributed uniformly over the length of the dummy rod and a catalyst is distributed over the internal wall, the fuel-oxygen mixture being fed through uniformly distributed holes in a central coaxial feed pipe. |
