[Also in Division C1] To bond insulating inorganic material to insulating inorganic material, the materials placed in close contact are heated to below their softening points to increase their electrical conductivity and an electric potential is then applied across the materials to produce an electrostatic force causing the materials to be attracted into intimate contact. Glasses, quartz, ceramics are joined to themselves or each other by this method and they may also be joined to metals by first forming a layer of the inorganic material on the metal substrate. |
