Paper is coated with a composition comprising an alkaline pigment and/or a non- alkaline pigment, a water-soluble pigment binder and one or more of the following compounds: a polymeric compound containing carboxyl radicals and/or a carboxylate salt of such a compound; a divinyl sulphone derivative which is soluble in water, has a low toxicity, and does not cause .gelation of the binder; a compound which has in its molecule at least one radical which is either an alcoholic hydroxyl radical or an aminic radical of formula -NR 2 , -NHR or -NH 2 , where R is a monovalent organic radical linked to the nitrogen atom by a bond to a carbon atom, and at least two carboxyl radicals, or a sodium, potassium or ammonium carboxylate salt of such a compound. |
