[Also in Division D1] A machine for making napkins comprises a rotatable drum 29 disposed so that its per phery is exposed to a current of short separated airborne fibres, the drum 29 having a plurality of compartments on its periphery each compartment being defined by a bottom plate and side plates, the bottom or inner plate of each compartment having a pattern of openings therethrough and having suction applied thereto to collect fibres in the compartments. The compartments may comprise flat plates with side portions having arc-shaped edges conforming to a cylindrical drum surface so that the pads formed are thicker in the middle, and they may be connected peripherally of the drum so that pads formed in consecutive compartments are connected. The airborne current fibres may be produced by a rotor 15 having a multitude of needles 17 which act with a stator 16 having needles 18 to disintegrate a strip of pulp 21 from a roll 19, in housing 27. A compressed segment of fibres may be included in the napkin, the segments being produced from short pulp fibres collected on forming drums 59 and 60 by suction from within the drum through a perforated periphery and discharged in the form of a continuous strip 66 as described in Specification No. 1,232,071. The strip may pass through squeeze rolls (69) and 70 which produce inwardly extending indentations in the side edge portion of the strip at intervals, and thence to rolls 72, 73 having pyramid shaped projections which emboss the strip with corresponding depressions. The strip then passes between rolls 77 and 78 whence it is cut into segments by means of knives 76 interacting with the exterior surface of roll 78. The segments are conveyed through pull rods 79, 80 and between belts 81 and 82 to be located on the bottom plates in the compactments of drum 29. The connected pads with their included segments may be cut into separate pads by roll 88 (fig. 12) with knives 89 co-operating with roll 90, then carried by a suitable pusher 92 onto a gauze web 101 supported on a belt 99, the gauze then being folded around the pad. |
