An ECU (1A) is provided for an engine (50A) provided with an exhaust gas-driven supercharger (30A) for supercharging intake air, and an intake-side VVT (57A) serving as a valve gear capable of changing the opening/closing timing of an intake valve (54), and is provided with a control means for performing advance control of the opening/closing timing of the intake valve (54) when the acceleration of the engine (50A) is suspended. Specifically, the control means performs the advance control of the opening/closing timings of two intake valves (54) in the same manner. The time when the acceleration is suspended involves, for example, the time when an automatic transmission (60) is shifted up. When the automatic transmission (60) is shifted down in response to a request for rapid acceleration, the time when the acceleration is suspended further involves the time when the automatic transmission (60) is shifted down.
