The pump has pump pistons (9) partly arranged in a pumping workspace. The pump pistons are driven by rotation of a drive shaft around a rotational axis over a cam. The cam moves the pump piston upwardly for compacting fuel in the pumping workspace. A spring element pushes the pump piston downwardly according to extension of a top dead center. The spring element is designed as a pneumatic spring element (38). The pneumatic spring element is arranged in a gas-tight container (35) with different compressible gas volumes.
