PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable identification of a user by obtaining contact positions of fingers in the same holding condition as the condition when the contact positions of the fingers as the reference are registered.

SOLUTION: A sheet-like pressure sensor 102 is wound around the holding part of a writing instrument, and pressure distribution regularly detected by the pressure sensor is associated with the detection time of the pressure distribution and stored in a memory 108. The timing of the start of writing action after the contact of the pen tip on the surface of paper is detected by monitoring the output from an acceleration sensor 104 attached to the writing instrument. The pressure distribution at timing that obtains a short time back from the timing of the start is read out from the memory and sent to a host device 150. In a personal characteristics database 168 of the host device 150, pressure distributions taken at timing when writing action starts are registered with each user holding a reference writing instrument. The host device 150 identifies each user by comparing the pressure distribution received from a writing-instrument-side device 100 with the registered information.
