<p>Title cpd. is prepd. by condensing beta-alanine with an alkanol of formula R. OH where R is lower alkyl, in presence of a strong acid condensing the salt of the beta-alanine ester with an alkyl oxalate in presence of an alkali metal alkoxide in an alcoholic medium to give an alkyl pyrrolidine-2,3-dione-4-carboxylate which is finally converted into the benzyl ester with benzyl alcohol in presence of an acid catalyst, esp. p-toluene sulphonic acid.</p> |
