In a catalytic igniter in which a coil of catalytically active material is mounted on a plug provided with contacts for insertion into an electric circuit the coil consists of a metal of the platinum or platinum alloy groups and of a sintered agglomerate containing metal of the platinum or platinum alloy group. The coil may be formed from two stranded wires or a single jacketed wire. The core of the jacketed wire may be (a) sintered of platinum and up to about 1 per cent. refractory oxide or (b) sintered of about 90 per cent. platinum, about 10 per cent. iridium and up to 1 per cent. refractory oxide or (c) sintered of about 96 per cent. platinum, about 4 per cent. tungsten and about 1 per cent. refractory oxide and the jacket may consist of pure platinum or 90 per cent. pure platinum plus 10 per cent. iridium. The wires of the two stranded wire arrangement may consist of any combination of jacket wires of (a). (b) and (c) above or of one wire from (a), (b) and (c) above with the other wire being of pure platinum or 90 per cent. platinum plus 10 per cent. iridium, or of one wire consisting of the sintered material at (a) with a wire of the material forming the jacket for the wires mentioned above. The element may be a coiled coil formed from stranded wire and having an inner diameter of .007 to .015 inch the sum of the cross sections of the strands being equal to the cross section of a single wire of a diameter .003 to .006 inch the primary coil having a spacing of about 10 to 35 turns per inch of linear length and the secondary coil having an inner diameter of about .04 to .1 inch and a spacing of about 8 to 18 turns per inch of linear length. |
