<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effective means for developing an assay for monitoring a nucleoside analog therapy and an assay for screening an agent that can mask the influence of mutation. <P>SOLUTION: Viral variants exhibit reduced sensitivity to specific medicine and/or reduced interactivity with immunological reagents. More particularly, hepatitis B variants exhibit complete or partial resistance to nucleoside analogs and/or reduced interactivity with antibodies to viral surface components.
