<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon material in which a layer of a metal having high reactivity with carbon, such as tungsten, can be formed on a carbon base while inhibiting a steep rise in production cost or a decrease in processing accuracy, and a method for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The carbon material includes a first layer 12 comprising a carbide of a transition metal and a second layer 13, which are formed in this order on the surface of a carbon base 2.
