Methods and systems for users to couple a phone to a motor vehicle head unit using a wired or wireless connection for the purpose of using the head unit as an external interface for the phone. The user may be permitted to control an application on the phone using the interface of the hand unit, depending on a determination via remote server. The server control software determines whether the identified application will be permitted to utilize the head unit as an extended interface. The server control software signals the client control software to control the phone and the head unit according to the determination.
