The system (1) has a code carrier (3) that is provided with an optical coding track (7) along the edge and movable with respect to a sensor (4) mounted in a sensor carrier (2). An illuminating unit is arranged for illuminating the coding track including a grating assembly. The grating assembly is comprised with different grid regions which are arranged along a scanning line (8) with specific grating angle and grating period so that the coding track is encoded based on q-ary pseudo random sequence. An independent claim is included for method for determining absolute position of sensor carrier.
