The device (6) has a control element (7) i.e. tilt-and-control knob, supportable on a cooking surface (2) of a domestic appliance i.e. hob (1), by magnetic force of a support magnet. The control element is movable relative to the surface. Multiple function magnets are provided for operational condition adjustment at the control element and connected with a magnetization part. The magnetization part is in contact with a magnetizable element i.e. closed ring, which is arranged at distance to the magnets so that magnetic field effect of the magnets is transferable on the magnetizable element. The operating device has a top cover made of plastic and including two coverings that are releasably connected to each other.
