A transport network (110) employs dual homing to an access network (120-1) to provide connectivity from multiple network switches (130-1,130-2), so that the access network employs the pair of switches in the transport network as if it were connecting to a single device. Static links (112-1,112-2) are established between the switches and another transport network switch (130-3). A dynamic or virtual connection (114) is also established between the switches, so that data from the switch 130-3 to the access network can continue in the event of failure of one of the switches 130-1,130-2 or a corresponding link. The dynamic link comprises tunnels defining separate physical paths to the access network and is identifiable by a single routing entry to avoid redundant routing entries in the switching devices.
