PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an AF control technology capable of bringing a camera in focus in accordance with an imaging intention of a photographer and an imaging scene.

SOLUTION: An imaging device comprises: main subject selection means to select a main subject from subjects detected by subject detection means; focus adjustment means to perform focus adjustment operation by detecting a state of focus on the main subject selected by the main subject selection means or on a predetermined subject in an image screen if the main subject is not in the image screen; mode switching means which has a first focus adjustment mode to perform the focus adjustment operation regardless of an existence of the main subject and a second focus adjustment mode to perform the focus adjustment operation only when the main subject exists; determination means to determine whether or not the main subject exists in the image screen or whether the main subject is changed; and control means to prohibit the focus adjustment operation when the determination means determines that the main subject does not exist in the image screen in the second focus adjustment mode or that the main subject is changed.
