<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid forming an image on a recording medium of a different size from a document size and conveniently reduce a user's operational load even when image reading is started with the document size undetermined. <P>SOLUTION: When image reading is started by an image reading section 101 with a document size undetermined, a main control section 8 of a copying machine sets a minimum size accommodating a document image region as a provisional document size, then determines whether or not the provisional document size is correctly the document size according to the ratio of the image region to the whole region of the provisional document size, and specifies the provisional document size or a size specified on a liquid crystal display section 30 as the document size in accordance with the result of determination.
