The present invention proposes a method capable of ensuring the accuracy equivalent to that obtained by a rotation matching method for performing matching while rotating a template image with a fewer times of matching than the rotation matching method, and capable of shortening the processing time. This method comprises the steps of: subjecting a template image (1) to geometric transformation to generate a first image group including a plurality of geometric-transformed template images having different amounts of geometric transformation; subjecting the image group to eigenvalue decomposition to calculate as many eigenvalues and eigenfunctions as the transformed template images; performing inner product operation between the plurality of eigenfunctions and the image group to generate a second image group; calculating the degree of similarity between an input image and the second image group; and determining a value of a geometric transformation parameter on the basis of the calculated degree of similarity.
