<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain satisfactory print quality by considering the kind of an ink ribbon and a printing medium used for printing or a combination of an ink ribbon and a recording medium, in a printer that prints by transferring an ink ribbon to a printing medium by a thermal head. <P>SOLUTION: The printer includes: a roll supporting unit configured to rotatably support a roll including a shaft having a plurality of slits in an end thereof and a strip-shaped material wound around the shaft; and a sensor unit configured to irradiate an area including the hub end portion of the roll supported by the roll supporting unit with light and receive reflected light of the light with which the area is irradiated. A determination unit determines identification information for identifying the roll based on a light reception result obtained from this sensor unit. A control unit sets a predetermined print condition based on the identification information determined by the determination unit.
