PURPOSE: A bus system operating method is provided to switch a bus system participant from a first state with decreased energy consumption to a second state with increased energy consumption compared to the first state. CONSTITUTION: A data frame including a message identification field and a useful data field is transmitted for communicating between bus system participants(28,30). The each participant responds to not only the useful data field and the message identification field but also a data frame with fixed data content for switching from a first state to a second state. The data frame has the message identification field content and the useful data field content, to which a selectively addressable participant responds, for selectively switching the participant from the first state to the second state.
