PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lithium ion secondary battery that restrains generation of lithium carbonate and thereby improves battery performance.

SOLUTION: There is provided a lithium ion secondary battery including a positive electrode and a negative electrode. The positive electrode 66 includes a positive electrode active material layer 64 formed on a positive electrode current collector 62, and a porous water repellent layer 90 including a material having repellency and a conductive material is formed on the surface of the positive electrode active material layer.
