<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent displacement of a folded position and a generation of a wrinkle, and securely fold a sheet to decrease the folded height. <P>SOLUTION: A sheet folding device includes: a folding blade 203 that flexes a sheet or bundle of sheets in a direction perpendicular to a transfer direction and guides the flexed part into between press plates 219, 220 that face the flexed part; and a press mechanism for the press plates 219, 220 that press and press-fold the flexed part. A gap between the press plates 219, 220 is variably controlled according to the thickness of the sheet or the bundle of the sheets during the period in which the sheet or the bundle of the sheets is guided into between the press plates 219, 220.
