The method involves moving laundry items (10) from a rotatably driven mangle roller (12) to a heatable trough mangle (11) that is attached to the mangle roller. Power is supplied to the laundry items from the heatable trough mangle. Exposed surfaces of the laundry items are pressurized with additional power outside a region of the trough mangle. The laundry items at the exposed surfaces are heated and/or pre-heated by pressurization with the additional power. Free surfaces of the laundry items are pressurized with vapor for providing the additional power. An independent claim is also included for a trough mangle for drying and smoothing laundry items.
