PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To match a shift stage instruction operation with an actual shift operation by displaying a correct shift stage instruction operation, in a shift control device of an automatic transmission with a manual mode (manually operable mode) and a shift stage instruction (display) function.

SOLUTION: The shift control device (1) calculates a final target gear stage based on a selectable gear group and a gear stage or a gear stage group optimum for improvement in fuel economy and compares the final target gear stage with a present gear stage to instruct a display device (4) to display an urging manual operation for switching the gear stage.
