The device i.e. encoder (10), has a light source i.e. organic LED, arranged at a distance from a light receiver, and a carrier plate provided with strip conductors on which a transparent substrate is arranged. The substrate and the plate are interconnected in a fixed manner by a flip-chip assembly. One of two tracks generates an incremental signal. The receiver is formed as sensor regions and includes a set of light receiver elements. One sensor region is co-operated with the track to generate the incremental signal, and the other region is co-operated with the other track i.e. encoded track. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining an absolute position of a movable part in a resting position.
