The invention relates to an arrangement for controlling the valves in an internal combustion engine. The arrangement comprises outlet openings 20, 20A, 20B which are closed by the piston 4 located towards the cam of the camshaft, and outlet openings 13A, 11A, 11B which are opened by the piston 6 located towards the valve. When outflow through the former outlet openings is permitted, inter alia the opening of the valve is delayed and the setting is set later than when outflow through the latter openings is permitted, because closing of the valve is then set later. In an embodiment of the invention, it is possible to keep the opening distance of the valve approximately the same when the open outlet duct 16 discharges transmitting liquid when the control valve 20D is open, while the rise of the valve when the control valve 20D is open is kept adequate as a consequence of the high cam 2 of the camshaft 1. The arrangement can moreover measure and/or regulate the balance or level of functioning between the various units of the valve control system and/or damp and regulate the force of impact between the valve and its seat. Furthermore, it is possible inter alia to combine with the arrangement a camshaft cam, with the extra lifting parts of which functions brought about can be taken into or out of use. It is also possible to make the valve temporarily non- operational. <IMAGE>
