<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive system and an automobile having the drive system. <P>SOLUTION: The present invention relates to the drive system (1) for a drive axle (2) of the automobile having an electric machine (16) that at least partially encloses the drive axle (2) and that is adapted for driving the drive axle (2). The electric machine (16) is coupled in a shiftable fashion to the drive axle (2) or is decoupled from the drive axle (2).
