PURPOSE:To produce the subject compound with high purity and in high yield by reacting a bromofluorobenzene with an alkali metal secondary alkolate in the presence of a copper salt or cobalt salt and subsequently hydrolyzing the produced secondary alkylaryl ether with hydrochloric acid. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (n is an integer of 1-5) s reacted with an alkali metal secondary alkolate, preferably sodium isopropoxide, in the presence of a copper salt or a cobalt salt such as cuprous chloride, cupric chloride, cuprous bromide, cupric bromide, cuprous iodide, cupric iodide, cuprous oxide, cupric oxide, 8-hydroxyquinoline copper salt, copper naphthenate or cobalt naphthenate, preferably a cuprous salt, to produce the compound of formula II (R is secondary alkyl) with high purity and in high yield. The compound of formula II is hydrolyzed with hydrochloric acid to readily and industrially produce a fluorophenol useful as an intermediate for medicines and agricultural chemicals in a good yield. |
