PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a copolymer wherein at least two vinyl monomers different in polymerizability can be copolymerized easily at a low cost by using a low-cost, stable polymerization catalyst capable of being easily synthesized. SOLUTION: In this method for producing a copolymer by copolymerizing at least two vinyl monomers each having at least one carbon-carbon double bond, a copper compound represented by formula I: LCuXn or formula II: L(L')Cu (wherein L and L' are each a ligand; X is halogen, alkoxy, thioxy, aryloxy, amino, sec-amino, tert-amino, cyano, nitro, alkyl or aryl; and n is 0, 1 or 2) is used, together with an organometallic compound, as a catalyst and/or a polymerization initiator.
