A server includes a plurality of virtual machines partitioned on the server and a first virtual switch. The first virtual switch is in communication with the virtual machines, and is configured to detect a connection of a first converged network adapter to the server, to determine network requirements of the virtual machines, and to determine whether the first converged network adapter has a first virtual network interface card that is compatible with the network requirements of the virtual machines. If the first virtual network interface card of the first converged network adapter is compatible with the network requirements of the virtual machines, then the first virtual switch provisions the first virtual network interface card as a second virtual switch for the virtual machines, otherwise the first virtual switch provisions a software-based virtual network interface card in the first virtual switch. |
