<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning method for the contaminated ground capable of cleaning the ground contaminated by chlorine volatile organic compounds while suppressing the generation of methane, and a cleaning material. <P>SOLUTION: In the cleaning method for the contaminated ground, iron powder and an activity suppressing material to suppress the activity of methane production bacterium present in the contaminated ground are mixed into the ground contaminated by the chlorine volatile organic compounds. The activity suppressing material is at least either sulfate or methane production suppressing material. As sulfate, sodium sulfate, calcium sulfate (gypsum), potassium sulfate, magnesium sulfate and the like are used.
