Provided is an electronic device whereby input characters can be used in a desired application by a simple operation, and a method for controlling the electronic device. While on screen (D5), if a leftward flicking operation is detected again by a motion sensor (18), a control unit (17) displays, instead of the screen of a notepad application, a browser application screen of a browser application different from the notepad application. While on screen (D6), if a detecting unit (12) detects the operation of a user's finger being lifted from the surface of a display unit (11), the control unit (17) inputs the input characters "water-proof mobile", displayed on the display unit (11), in a search box on the browser application and launches the browser application (screen D7).
