PURPOSE: An electric vehicle and a method for operating a cruise function thereof are provided to easily change a maintenance speed by changing the maintenance speed with the simple manipulation of an accelerator or a brake in the set-up status of a cruise mode. CONSTITUTION: A speed sensing unit senses the velocity of a vehicle. An interface unit inputs settings for controlling the vehicle through the manipulation of an operator by including an accelerator, a brake, and a cruise key. A motor controller changes a vehicle speed by controlling the drive of a motor. A controller performs a cruise mode in an input state of the cruise key. The controller establishes a maintenance speed in a cruise mode corresponding to vehicle velocity change inputted through the speed sensing unit.
