A tool for friction stir welding which, even when used for the friction stir welding of a work made of a metal or alloy having a melting point as high as 1,350°C or above, is less apt to cause an impurity to come therefrom into the work and is less apt to wear and break. The tool for friction stir welding can be used for the friction stir welding of metals or alloys having a melting point as high as 1,350°C or above as works. At least that part of the tool which comes into contact with the works has a composition which contains iridium, contains rhenium, ruthenium, molybdenum, tungsten, niobium, tantalum, rhodium, or two or more of these, further contains zirconium, hafnium, lanthanum, cerium, samarium, gadolinium, scandium, yttrium, or two or more of these, and has a hardness of 300 Hv or higher in terms of micro-Vickers hardness. |
