DEVICE FOR DETECTING THICKNESS OF PAPER SHEET AND BILL HANDLING APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for detecting thickness of a paper sheet, which can accurately detect alternated paper money to which a tape or the like is stuck and which can be loaded in a bill handling apparatus.

SOLUTION: The device for detecting the thickness of the paper sheet is constituted of: a reference roller 11 driven to rotate; a detection roller 6 in which an outer ring 16 is pressed to the reference roller 11 and rotates following the rotation thereof and an elastic member 15 is filled into a space between the outer ring 16 and a rotary shaft 14; a meandering preventing roller 5 coming in contact with the outer ring 16 of the detection roller 6 and rotating following the rotation of the outer ring 16; and displacement detection sensors 18 and 19 detecting movement of the outer ring 16 moving upward in accordance with thickness of the paper sheets 4. By providing the meandering preventing roller 5, inclination or meandering of the detection roller 6 caused by frictional resistance between the paper sheets 4 and the detection roller 6 is prevented, and jumping of the detection roller 6 when biting at the paper sheets 4 is suppressed. Thus, the alternated paper money to which the tape or the like is stuck is accurately detected.
