<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To comfortably perform desired jump retrieval processing corresponding to the moment-to-moment necessity of a user with an excellent operability in an electronic dictionary apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: A jump mode icon BJ is displayed on a main screen (touch panel type) 17 and a sub-screen (touch panel type) 16, which consists of: a [last time dictionary] icon Bb for allowing a dictionary of a jump retrieval destination of a retrieval character string designated and displayed h on a dictionary information display screen G to be a dictionary used last time; a [dictionary selection] icon Bs for allowing the jump retrieval destination dictionary to be a dictionary selected by a user; and a [small dictionary] icon Bm for allowing the jump retrieval destination dictionary to be a condensed dictionary. A jump retrieval result by the last time dictionary or the selection dictionary is displayed in the same way as normal dictionary retrieval processing, and condensed explanation information jump-retrieved by the condensed dictionary is displayed on the screen G as a small dictionary window Wm.
